Increase to right to request parental leave postponed

The government has postponed the extension of unpaid parental leave until 2013. This was due to be implemented by March 2012.

The Parental Leave Directive obliges European countries to allow parents with a child under the age of five to take up to 18 weeks’ unpaid parental leave. The entitlement would be an extension of five weeks upon current provisions.

The government is allowed to take up to a year longer to implement the Directive, while it develops its wider framework for family-friendly workplace policies.
