Increase of national minimum wage takes effect 1 October 2013

The government has confirmed that the National Minimum Wage will increase from £6.19 to £6.31 per hour for adults.

The National Minimum Wage for 18-20 year olds will also increase from £4.98 to £5.03 per hour. The new minimum wage for apprentices will be £2.68 per hour.

The rates are set out in full on the gov.uk website.

Employers will need to ensure that any staff paying the National Minimum Wage update their rates of pay effective 1 October 2013.

Furthermore, employers should be careful that volunteers do not advertently qualify as workers, as workers will also be entitled to claim the National Minimum Wage. Further information is available from the gov.uk website.
