Annual limit on migration comes into force

From April 2011, the number of workers permitted to enter the UK from outside the EU is limited.

Tier 1 is restricted to entrepreneurs, investors and those of exceptional talent - capped at 1,000 migrants per annum. Tier 2 is restricted to graduate-level skilled workers - capped at 20,700 migrants per annum.

There is no limit on the number of workers entering the UK via intra-company transfers. However those wishing to stay longer than 12 months will be required to earn more than £40,000 per year and the maximum stay permitted will be five years. Those earning more than £150,000 per year will not be subject to the limit.
